The objective of this evaluation is to recognize, sum up, and evaluate scientific trials to identify the efficacy of curcuma in the treatment of osteoarthritis. A literature search for interventional research studies evaluating effectiveness of curcuma was performed, resulting in 8 scientific trials. Research studies have examined the result of curcuma on discomfort, tightness, and performance in patients with knee osteoarthritis. Curcuma-containing products consistently showed statistically significant improvement in osteoarthritis-related endpoints compared to placebo, with one exception. When compared with active control, curcuma-containing products were similar to nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, and potentially to glucosamine. While statistical considerable distinctions in outcomes were reported in a bulk of research studies, the small magnitude of result and presence of significant study constraints impede application of these results.
