Relatives include the widespread duckweed, skunk cabbage, calla lily and Jack-in-the-pulpit. During the first stage, carrion beetles drawn by the stench of dying and human-like physique temperatures, creep inside the vase-like structure and unknowingly deposit pollen on the receptive female flowers. During the second stage, the structure begins to collapse, the "fragrance" fades and the bugs start to head out. As they go away, the beetles rub up in opposition to the pollen in the male flowers and at the second are ready to carry the pollen to a nearby female flower. Only a handful of these unusual Indonesian vegetation bloom every year at public gardens worldwide. SDBG is the one recognized backyard within the area that grows this exotic species.
