Perhaps one of the most well-known games worldwide, the name sudoku originated in Japan and consists of the characters Su, meaning number, and Doku, meaning unique. The game itself, however, came from Sweden and reached Japan via America where it was called Number Place. A key reason why the game became so popular in Japan is the nature of the Japanese language. Due to Japanese being a symbolic language, producing the classic verbal crosswords was quite a difficult process. However, Sudoku being a numerical crossword was a very good alternative to print media. In fact, its first appearance took place in 1984 in the magazine Monthly Nikoli under the name Sūji wa dokushin ni kagiru which means "digits appear only once" after first undergoing two changes in the rules that shaped today's Sudoku. |
